Why drivers come up the hill
A Diagnosis You Can Repeat Back to Someone Else
If you cannot explain the repair to your spouse after the call, we did not explain it well enough. That standard shapes everything below. It is also why we would rather spend an extra twenty minutes confirming a fault than spend your money on a part that turns out not to be the problem.
Test first, replace second
A code reader gives a hint. We follow it with pressure tests, meter readings and a drive, so the part we replace is the part that failed.
One person, start to finish
The technician who inspects your car is the one who calls you and the one who does the work. Nothing gets lost in a handoff between a counter and a bay.
Gas or diesel, same bay
Commuter sedans, family SUVs and diesel pickups that tow over the pass all go through the same careful process.
Urgent, soon, or later
Every finding gets sorted by how much it matters right now, so you fix what keeps you safe today and plan for the rest.
Worth a look
Five Signs Your Vehicle Should Come In Soon
None of these mean disaster. All of them mean something has changed, and catching it early is almost always the cheaper path.
The brake pedal feels different
Softer, lower, or pulsing under your foot on the way down the hill. Pedal feel changes before stopping distance does, so treat it as an early warning.
A warning light that stays on
A check engine, ABS or battery light that does not go out after a restart is the computer telling you it has logged a fault worth reading.
Shifts that hesitate or slam
A pause before drive engages, or a hard thump between gears, is often a fluid or solenoid problem that is far cheaper to fix now than after it slips.
New noises from underneath
Clunks over bumps, a hum that rises with speed, or a squeal on turns usually point to suspension joints, bearings or steering parts wearing out.
Smoke, smells or drips
Sweet smells mean coolant, burnt smells mean oil or clutch, and black or white smoke from a diesel means fuel or emissions trouble. All are worth a look before a long drive.

Three Steps From Symptom to Repair
No guesswork in the middle, and no surprises at the end. The whole thing usually takes one phone call, one visit and one decision that stays entirely yours.
Describe it on the phone
Tell us what the car does, when it started and whether it gets worse on the grade. We book a free inspection on a weekday that works for you.
We find it and explain it
The technician inspects the system you called about, confirms the cause with testing, and calls you with the findings and the price of the fix.
You decide, we repair
Say yes to all of it, part of it or none of it. We do only what you approve, then road test the vehicle before you pick it up.
No charge
What the Free Vehicle Inspection Covers
The inspection starts with whatever made you call, then widens to the parts that commonly fail alongside it. You get a phone call afterward with what we saw, what needs attention now, what can wait, and the cost of each fix. There is no obligation to approve anything.
- Stored and pending trouble codes
- Brake pads, rotors, lines and fluid
- Steering and suspension joints
- Belts, hoses and visible leaks
- Fluid levels and condition
- Tires and wheel bearings
Common questions
Answers Before You Call
Short answers to the questions we hear most often from drivers along the corridor. If yours is not here, ask it on the phone; we would rather answer it before you make the drive than after.
- My check engine light came on. Can I keep driving?
- If the light is steady and the car drives normally, it is usually fine to drive it to the shop, though not for weeks on end. A flashing light means the engine is actively misfiring and can overheat the catalytic converter. Find a safe place to stop and phone the shop.
- Will I know the price before the work starts?
- Yes. After the free inspection we call with what we found and what it costs to fix. Work starts only after you agree, and anything new found mid-repair gets its own phone call first.
- How long does a brake job usually take?
- Most pad and rotor jobs on one axle are finished in a few hours. Calipers, lines or ABS faults can add time, and we tell you that when we call with the price.
- Can I just drop my car off, or do I need an appointment?
- Call ahead and book a time. That way a technician is ready for the vehicle when you arrive and the inspection does not sit in line behind other jobs.
- Can you handle a diesel pickup, or just gas vehicles?
- Yes. Light-duty diesels are regular work here: injectors, turbos, glow plugs, EGR and DPF faults, plus routine diesel maintenance.
- Is my engine worth repairing, or should I replace it?
- It depends on what failed and how the rest of the engine tests. We run compression and leak-down checks, then price the repair and a replacement side by side and tell you which makes sense for the miles on your vehicle.
Where we work
Serving Silver Plume and the Clear Creek Corridor
Our customers live along I-70 between the Eisenhower Tunnel and Idaho Springs. Most leave the car on the morning run down the valley and collect it on the drive back up. Long grades, cold starts and winter roads take a real toll on brakes, cooling and gearboxes, which is why most of the work we see is the kind worth catching before the next trip over the pass.

A Small Shop With a Simple Promise
Auto Repair Silver Plume keeps things small on purpose. One technician handles your vehicle from the first look to the final road test, and that same person answers your questions on the phone. You will always know who worked on your car and why each part was replaced. We would rather tell you a repair can wait than sell you one you do not need, and the people who come back to us year after year are the reason why.
